Contractors have been working alongside Menter Môn over recent weeks on initial site exploration work in preparation for its tidal stream energy development.
The current activity near the proposed Morlais site is a key part of the pre-construction phase, as the scheme awaits final consent from Welsh Government.
Having recently received initial indication from Julie James, Minister for Climate Change that she is ‘minded’ to grant the scheme permission subject to satisfying certain planning conditions, the team is now awaiting final confirmation before construction can begin.
A decision is also expected by Natural Resources Wales with regards to granting Morlais a Marine Licence. The license will allow turbines to be deployed in the sea and is a key part of the consenting process.
Subject to all necessary approval, construction and operation will happen in phases to allow for monitoring of wildlife and habitat. It is hoped work on land can begin over the next few months with work offshore to start in 2023.
The project has received support from the Isle of Anglesey County Council, Wales European Funding Office (WEFO), the NDA (Nuclear Decommissioning Agency) as well as the North Wales Growth Deal.
