High Voltage Authorised Training

A few weeks ago, I attended the Limited Operation of High Voltage (HV) Power Systems course delivered by PASS Ltd in Stockton-on-Tees. This three-day course provided a valuable introduction to the roles and responsibilities of Authorised Persons involved in the safe operation and maintenance of high voltage electrical systems.

Throughout the course, I developed a strong understanding of the different types of HV switchgear, as well as the generic features, documentation, and procedures that underpin HV Safety Rules. A key focus was on the importance of following safe operating procedures before any work begins, ensuring that systems are correctly isolated, verified, and documented to protect both personnel and equipment.

A particularly valuable element of the training was the practical exercise on the centre’s purpose-built practice rig, which operates at an intrinsically safe 110V. During this exercise, I gained hands-on experience in preparing a switching schedule, safely isolating switchgear, issuing a permit-to-work, and ultimately restoring the system to service. This practical application reinforced the theoretical knowledge covered and highlighted the precision, planning, and accountability required when working with HV systems.

This course represents an important step towards my Competent Person nomination under our HV Safety Rules at Morlais, managed by EDS HV. Achieving this nomination will enable me to hold safety documentation and oversee personnel working on, or in proximity to, Morlais’ High Voltage apparatus. This training has helped me develop invaluable technical and safety skills, including risk awareness, procedural compliance, and practical HV operational competence.

These skills are essential for ensuring safe and reliable electrical system operation and will play a key role in supporting my continued professional development. The experience has strengthened my confidence in working with high voltage systems and marks a significant milestone in my progression as an engineer.
