First Minister and Climate Change Ministers welcomed on Morlais stand at MEW Conference

Mark Drakeford, First Minister and Julie James, Climate Change Minister visited the Morlais team at the recent Marine Energy Wales (MEW) conference at the Swansea Arena. The conference was attended by industry experts, policymakers, and researchers to discuss the future of marine energy and its potential impact on the Welsh economy.

During his visit, the First Minister expressed his support for the development of marine energy projects in Wales and the important role they play in the transition to a low-carbon economy. He commended Menter Môn for its efforts in promoting the growth of the marine energy industry in Wales and the organisation’s contributions through the development of the Morlais tidal energy project off the coast of Anglesey.

During his keynote speech at the conference he also highlighted the achievement of an award of a Contract for Difference to Magallanes at the Morlais site last year.

John Jenkins, a Director of Morlais Energy, welcomed both to the stand, he said: “We were delighted that both Mark Drakeford and Julie James came to visit us at Swansea last week. Their support for the marine energy sector is crucial, and we look forward to working together to create a sustainable and prosperous future for Wales.”

The Morlais tidal energy project is a significant investment in the development of renewable energy, with the potential to generate up to 240 MW of clean energy. The project has received support from the European Union and the Welsh government, and is expected to have a positive impact on the local economy though employment and supply chain opportunites.

Morlais funded by the European Regional Development fund through the Welsh Government. It is also supported by the Isle of Anglesey County Council, North Wales Growth Deal, as well as The Nuclear Decommissioning Authority.
