Morlais tidal energy celebrates at Institution of Civil Engineers Cymru (ICE) Awards
North Wales tidal energy scheme, Morlais was successful at the recent Institution of Civil Engineers Cymru (ICE) Awards held at the Marriott Hotel, Cardiff. The scheme is managed by social enterprise, Menter Môn, and won the Alun Griffiths award for Community Engagement.
The ICE Awards celebrate achievements in the Welsh construction industry. This year, judges agreed that Morlais, with its partnership with contractor Jones Bros Civil Engineering UK stood out for its exceptional community engagement efforts during the construction of the infrastructure of the project. The award recognises the commitment in developing strong relationships with local communities, ensuring open communication and minimising the disruption throughout the construction process.
On receiving the award, Ian Hughes, Business Manager at Menter Môn Morlais Ltd, thanked the team and said: "We are thrilled to be recognised for the Community Engagement award. Throughout the construction of the project infrastructure and in collaboration with Jones Bros Civil Engineering UK, engaging with the local community was a key part in developing a strong relationship with the local community. As a third sector not for profit company, Menter Môn in developing the Morlais Project has always tried to ensure that the local community and long-term community benefits remains at its core, and we are proud to have been recognised in our work with the local community by the ICE”
Jones Bros senior contracts manager Brendan Fieldhouse, who oversaw the scheme, said: “It’s fantastic that Morlais has secured this award. We know from our time working on the project just how important engaging with the community was.
“For example, road closures will happen on schemes such as this, but explaining the process to people impacted makes them feel valued and that their opinions and voices are being heard.”
With its unique operating model, Morlais is seen as a leader in the tidal energy sector. The first turbines are expected to be deployed in the sea from 2026. The energy team at Menter Môn are currently working with several developers of tidal technology to ensure this happens whilst maximising local benefit. The first phase of Morlais was funded by the European Regional Development fund through Welsh Government. The Isle of Anglesey County Council, The NDA and the North Wales Growth Deal also support the project.
